Skiffy & Fanty & Me!

Here’s another of those cool things I’ve been meaning to tell you. So excited about this one as I’m a big fan of the Skiffy and Fanty Show and recently I recorded a podcast with them, all about The Treachery of Beautiful Things, and folklore, and storytelling, and… all sorts of things. It was great.

(I’m late telling you guys because of holidays. My holidays were rather wonderful and I didn’t do a lot of things. I have a multitude of photos which I have to put together in some sort of manageable format and link).

So here it is

hee – they called me the fairy queen! Don’t tell Titania.

No seriously, please don’t tell her.

Dublin 2019 – A bid for the 77th Worldcon

I’m back from holidays and I’ve loads of things to share but first and foremost I wanted to share THIS! I’m one of the supporters and I’m really really excited about it. As part of the group who visited the convention center where it is proposed Worldcon would be held, I was seriously impressed.

The (rather beautiful) website is http://dublin2019.com/

You can download the brochure http://dublin2019.com/the-plan/  , explore the proposed venue, the CCD  http://dublin2019.com/our-venue/ and see all the reasons why this would be totally awesome!

Likes and follows are much appreciated

Help spread the word!

Here’s the press release:

A collective of dedicated fans within the Irish science fiction community has announced its intentions to launch a bid to host the 77th Worldcon in Ireland in 2019. The plans were made public at the 71st Worldcon, LoneStarCon in Texas on Friday, August 30.

For many fans of the genre, the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) is one of the biggest events of the year. The convention is chiefly known for presenting the annual Hugo Awards Ceremony. The Hugo Awards are classed among the highest honours bestowed for science fiction and fantasy writing. However, the convention is also a celebration of all forms of speculative fiction, film and more, from comics to cosplay and manga and anime to gaming.

There will be an open meeting on the Dublin bid for all interested parties at Octocon, the National Science Fiction Convention in Ireland on Saturday the 12th of October.

Volunteers from all areas of Irish conrunning and fandom as well as people who may never have been involved in or even attended a convention before are welcome at any stage of planning and can contact organisers by email at volunteer@dublin 2019.com. The website can be found at www.dublin2019.com and there is a Facebook page at facebook.com/Dublin2019 and a Twitter account @dublin 2019.

Planning and bidding to host a Worldcon is no small endeavour. Ireland already has a huge community of science fiction fans as well as a plethora of writers and artists that work in the genre in its many forms, and Irish fandom has been gaining momentum and building strong foundations on which to successfully host a Worldcon..

Irish fandom is also constantly generating interest and enthusiasm through the host of conventions that are run every year such as Octocon, Arcade Con, Nom Con, Eirtakon and more. Irish fans started making waves in international fandom when they won the bid for Dublin to host Eurocon in August 2014, officially called Shamrokon.

A convention such as Worldcon deserves a welcoming and engaging atmosphere for fans both international as well as local, which is why the Convention Centre Dublin has been put forward as an ideal venue for a Dublin Worldcon. The CCD has fully built-in technical facilities needed to support an event like Worldcon and among other features boasts a 2,000 seat auditorium with a full theatrical stage, six spacious foyers and 4,500 square metres of exhibition space.

The CCD also has the advantage of a very central location in Dublin City, easily accessible by public transport as well as by car. In the centre of the newly developed Dublin Docklands the CCD affords easy access to a range of hotels and cultural sites. A visit to the CCD is also planned for the 14th of October for all interested parties.

The official launch of the Dublin Bid is set to take place at the 72nd Worldcon in London next year followed by a launch at Shamrokon.

A little break in our usual programming

Just to let people know I’ll be mostly offline for the next couple of weeks.

But when I come back… oh when I come back…

*awkward silence*

In the meantime, I found this clip of Eddie Lenihan, a seanchaí, and his story of the black dog. Seanchaí are traditional Irish storytellers and folk historians. I love Black Dog legends. There’s one near where I grew up, and my mother’s family come from Dartmoor so… enough said.

I’m currently reading Eddie Lenihan’s book Meeting the Other Crowd.

For reasons.

The Treachery of Beautiful Things Paperback day

It’s paperback release day. *throws confetti & lets off fireworks*

Cover for Paperback edition

Pretty cover is still ridiculously pretty! And now has ominous words!

To celebrate I’m giving away a signed copy of the hardback or the paperback (your choice) of The Treachery of Beautiful Things, and a beautiful oak pendent from the Irish Archaeology shop.

In Celtic folklore the oak is the king of the trees. One of the many legends I touched on in The Treachery of Beautiful Things is that of the oak king and the holly king, and their eternal battle for control of the forest. As the seasons turn, one or the other takes control, defeating the other. But the seasons always turn, and the king is always reborn so the battle continues. Until one king finds a way to enslave the other.

The oak is a majestic tree. There’s one just over my backgarden wall.

So in order to win, leave me a comment telling me your favorite tree or tree legend. The more the merrier so tell your friends and spread the word about the giveaway. It’s open worldwide and I’ll close it this time next week (8th August).

Come one come all. Help me celebrate being a paperback writer. *wanders off singing the Beatles*

Look at the new shiny!

I’m so excited to launch my new look website today. The wonderful Crystal Jordan did an incredible job capturing my rambling descriptions of what I wanted the website to look like and actually make it a reality. She even made me a pretty banner to share!

Sometimes it moves. That seems to depend on where it is and whether if wants to mess with my head or not! 😀

I’m so thrilled with the whole thing and hope you like it too. The launch of the paperback of The Treachery of Beautiful Things is just over a week away so I’m sure to be doing a giveaway and a number of posts to coincide with that.

More exciting things to come!

Shiny!

Fun and games with the Romantic Novelists

Finally getting myself back into action after the Romantic Novelists Conference this year, which was held in Sheffield, at a place called the Edge. Oh the jokes just write themselves there… women on the edge, anyone?

IMG_4294 (800x533)

It was of course another wonderful conference. Filled with good food and great company. There was some toasting and a kitchen party with the ChocLit crew.IMG_4300 (800x533)

If you’ve never been to an RNA Conference, the kitchen parties are something else. There are always several naughty kitchens. This year however I wimped out on Friday night because I had “things to do” on Saturday. I was wise. It is a rare event.

On Saturday morning Imogen Howson and I gave a talk on writing YA.

RNATalk

Our lovely audience began to gather, bringing with them excellent reading materials.

Saturday night is gala dinner night so dressed in our finery the girls of F3 (Kate Johnson, Imogen Howson, myself, Sarah Callejo, Talli Roland and Jane Lovering) headed off to the ball. At the Edge. And over the edge.

We have a rep to live up to. Or something.IMG_4337 (800x533)

Kate won the Elizabeth Goudge trophy with a novel opening about Ice Giants apparently. Now I want to read it. It’ll go on the list with that murder mystery set on a spaceship about reincarnation I need to write now… The danger of chatting with writers in groups. It brings out the plot bunnies.

IMG_4348 (800x533)

The party may have continued for some time. Hey, we had things to celebrate. Again.

Most of all we celebrated spending another wonderful conference together. By the time I got home, nice as it was to be back, I admit to being homesick for flat F3. Roll on next year in Shropshire. I’m thinking another road trip is in order. Who’s with me?

(please excuse the slightly dodgy alignment of photos and text – I’m having fun and games with my website too. But soon that will all change. Oh yes. Bwahahahaha! News to come).
